"Sometimes what is holding you back is not a weakness. It is a strength that has lost its balance."
Not a weakness. Not a gap in your skills. Not a failure of character. A strength – that has quietly lost its balance. Attention to detail becomes control. Care for others becomes people-pleasing. High standards become perfectionism. Drive becomes exhaustion. Humility becomes silence. Kindness becomes avoidance.
Sound familiar?
I’ve seen this pattern more times than I can count in coaching. High performers assume that if a quality helped them succeed, they should simply keep doing more of it. But leadership doesn’t work that way. The same pattern that helped you earn trust, deliver results, or build your reputation can eventually become the ceiling on your next level of impact.
The leader who sees every detail may stop seeing the bigger picture. The leader who always helps may never set a boundary. The leader who wants everything done well may delay until the opportunity has passed. The leader who never wants to disappoint may avoid the very conversation that would create clarity.
This is what the Challenge step in the SCALE model is really about. Not self-criticism. Not tearing down what worked. Getting honest. What pattern is running me right now? What old rule am I still obeying? Where am I calling it “being good” when it may actually be fear?
Because here’s what I’ve learned:
Integrity without courage becomes silence. Integrity without boundaries becomes resentment. Integrity without strategy becomes frustration. The effective leader doesn’t need to become harder. They need to become clearer.
Where have you seen a strength become an over-strength – in yourself or in someone you’ve led?
